Interview with the creators of the We-Vibe: Bruce and Melody Murison

Bruce and Melody Murison spent most of the previous decade working undercover in the design of the We-Vibe. Bruce, 48, used his experience as a former Nortel engineer to design a personal massager that can be used during intercourse, but does not interfere in the act itself. After numerous prototypes, some tested to exhaustion, and the search for a manufacturer, the We-Vibe was born. Now with the success of the We-Vibe in hand Bruce is working hard on developing the next crop of revolutionary sex toys.

To make a sex toy, such ergonomic should be a great challenge. How did you do the tests of the We-Vibe? What adjustments did you have to do throughout the product development?

We went through six different versions until you reach the We-Vibe. In each version, we analyze the feedback from users "experts" and this feedback was used to modify the product before making the next version. This process took about five years. We analyze the product for all possible angles, including rotations of high and low speeds, the runtime minimum, the performance of silicon, the size of pillows internal and external anatomy test, engine power, etc., etc..

Each factor is a "trade off" of others. For example, if I made the We-Vibe more powerful, he would have become larger, require larger engines, as battery size increases significantly, it would work and would need less time to recharge. We-Vibe is small, but powerful in exact measure. He has better power to weight x vibrators in its class. Most tests revolved around making a strong enough inside to fit perfectly in women, but flexible enough to fit comfortably and can be used in different sexual positions during intercourse.

What were the technologically most challenging aspects in creating the We-Vibe?
We had to develop our own custom engine because no existing engine was small enough and powerful enough. Much research has also been re-quired in flexible material for the internal structure of the product. It had to be flexible, but return to its original shape after use and also be gentle to not hurt in case of extended use. Also we chose the NiMH battery, because it is free of heavy metals. The silicone used in the medical field for setting material is latex and free of phthalate therefore completely nontoxic.

What you have to say to those who claim that the We-Vibe is priced higher than competitors in its category?

In fact, every We-Vibe makes use of a cast steel - this is a slow and expensive and that is why we have to manufacture in China. If fabricássemos in the United States, the We-Vibe would cost more than $ 200. The medical grade silicone is about 4 times more expensive than the cheapest material available ... And we bought the silicone in Europe, so we are sure that the We-Vibe is manufactured in China with silicone specified in your manual production, thereby maintaining the required quality. The motors and batteries are also expensive, but the battery lasts about 500 loads (several times more common than other batteries) and engines are tested to ensure a long life of at least 100 hours when run at 40 ° C and moisture conditions of 100%. The We-Vibe is designed to last many years of enjoyment. Estimating weekly use for half an hour daily, a We-Vibe can last about four years, some will fail sooner, but many others must last much longer. We purposely design decisions in the We-Vibe to make it a product of extreme quality. In five years we intend to have many different products and we want the world recommend a We-Vibe to anyone looking for products to last a long, long time.

The technology has to be expensive, until we do millions of products, production becomes more efficient and prices fall as a result of increased production. We also plan to make some new products that are a lot cheaper than the We-Vibe.

There is a need for products for couples (couples or not) that one can use independently to explore their own sexuality without the other partner to feel rejected or inadequate. Do you have any interest in this product line?

We have a huge list of products that we think we can do that are significantly better than what currently exists. So ... YES - we want to make a whole family of products for all purposes, used alone or in combination products are thought to date by other companies and we also have some things in mind we believe that even someone conceived ... yet.

In his remarkable journey of ten years to produce a masterpiece of excellence in sex toy, what are your secrets to keep the focus?

You solve one thing at a time. A major project will be immense, if you try to do everything at once. The idea for the We-Vibe was conceived in 2001, we started prototyping in 2002 and the final design was not ready until summer 2007. Patience and persistence is my motto.

My lab has consumed the garage, basement and often the kitchen ... But Melody is a patient person. The lab was a bit like you see in James Bond movies, with vacuum pumps, hoses and things hanging from caneletas, spread beyond the electronic materials.

Once the product started the operation to distribute the We-Vibe worldwide. Now I need a good vacation time, for sure. Melody and I fell on the road for one year for product presentations around the world and now we look forward to a vacation.

What is your advice to someone who may be reading and thinking about inventing a product erotic?

Get business advice and listen to industry experts erotic. The inventor needs to focus on the product and should get it so you can show a business person. If you can not convince a business person that your idea is really the best thing it is good to think twice before investing more time and money. I thought it would have the We-Vibe in production in early 2004! It took much longer than expected (four years). Before going to show anyone - Make the patent of his creation. The world is full of very "nice" that will steal your idea, why ideas need legal protection.

What has received feedback from couples who used the We-Vibe to improve your relationships? How does this kind of positive feedback can help you design your next product?

We have many amazing stories and women and couples have sent special messages to thank us. Our favorite quote is like, "Thank you for what you did for women."

We are encouraged to create toys more than enable women to take control of your pleasure and your sex life. Women certainly enjoy the stimulation of the clitoris and g spot, while enjoying the intimacy of making love and are also enjoying the We-vibe like a toy ground. Others think it is a great Kegel exerciser because the vibrations will help you find muscles and flexible movements also help to locate the point G.

We believe that the world is transforming society and giving room for the use of erotic products as reinforcement of sex.

Men appreciate this partnership with the We-Vibe and this new trial may become more open to using products to help satisfy their partners more creatively, thus expanding your pleasure.

After the We-Vibe took off, how you decided it was definitely time to invest in this new career?

I've always been an inventor. I have at least a dozen patents, but never brought a product to market before the We-Vibe. Change is always a difficult process ... But I was always brave enough to go ahead and try something new. I was laid off from Nortel in 2003 and took this as an opportunity to pursue full-time with the We-Vibe. We live for years without income and savings for our whole life was consumed. We invest a lot of friends and family - who were motivated to make a successful We-Vibe. Our neighbors used to joke that we could live in the basement, if things have not worked well because we lived there all the time. So we are very grateful that today the business is self-sufficient and we are generating enough money to start new projects.

What was your experience with the erotic market before devising the We-Vibe?

Melody and I had no real experience or detailed knowledge of erotic products before we start. Perhaps the reason why it was successful was that we did not come in this industry and we were very naive to assume that a product could not be in the middle of the couple during intercourse, as was commonly thought in the industry. And we had a very innocent idea of a vibrator that fits between a couple while making love.

How do you imagine the future of erotic products?

The Phillips TV and now has made a vibrator ... This must mean something. The products continue to evolve in the erotic world of high technology and I certainly intend to be on this front, superior products with inventing the term "new form and new" and I am eager to bring a whole family of products "innovative" to the world. This is my small effort to promote world peace. We will also keep us faithful to our command not to do anything I would not want to have or a loved one to use. The electronics in the product will be the first thing to move quickly, because it increasingly easy for large companies to mass produce prototypes of sophisticated computer chips specifically designed for sex toys. American society has come a long way in the last 15 years. The consumption of erotic products was 15% for more than 50% of the population of the country, so we always see good prospects for expansion.

We-vibe vibrators is one of the most popular for couples today. Do you have any idea what it would be so popular?

We knew from our research groups and feedback that the We-Vibe would be a great product, but did not know if it would actually be salable. We are delighted that the We-Vibe is being well received by audiences and critics.

However, we are not really sure if We-Vibe vibrator is the best selling as compared to other high-end, because there is a lot of data and the actual numbers of sales are protected by tenants. We selling more than 10,000 per month throughout the world. We expect sales in Europe and the United States continue to rise, and perhaps as we have heard that some vibrators have sold over one million units worldwide, reach this mark, but we know we have a long way to go!

Have you ever had to deal with other manufacturers who have tried to copy the project We-Vibe?

Not yet, but our lawyers are waiting. Patent have in most industrialized countries around the world, which should help. The We-Vibe is not done in the same manufacturing process of other vibrators, and this should also slow down the copy. To falsify the We-Vibe would have to spend much money to develop the tools and manufacturing processes and at the same time, it has the risk of counterfeit goods being seized if we meet, it's so we hope that our patent continues to be respected.

What motivated you to create the We-Vibe and join the erotic products industry?

Pay our bills and ... An outlet for my creative side. The high tech industry has been decimated in Ottawa, and the only solution was to create our own jobs.

You hit the market when the success of most products was divided between the big companies like Doc Johnson and Calexotics. In the future, who do you think will dominate this market: small manufacturers with quality products or the production of large companies in mass?

I think the world is tending to large companies and this will likely continue in the industry of sex toys. The inventive process is best done in teams of incubation smaller and smaller companies are often better able to come up with new devices, but they do not stay so long, they tend to grow quickly or be bought by large companies. 'm Cool with both options except for the failure. We keep our finances lean and have a savings account, in case we need money to defend our intellectual property. We plan to develop a family of new products and thus grow to a medium-sized company over the next year. We have the best brains in business and financial world of engineering contractors to help transform my creative ideas mass-produced devices, as we hope to do a lot of people very happy and satisfied. I like when I hear that people fell asleep with your We-Vibe in operation ... After a great enjoyment, this is our prime directive ... people contented and happy.

There was one big party when We-Vibe was named "Top Product of the Year" by viewers of the program Sue Johanson?

We raised a glass of wine, but it was a time of occupation and have not had much time to enjoy the party. The first time I really reflect on the success was when the We-Vibe won for "Most Innovative Product" in Germany in the biggest event of its kind. We climbed the stage to receive the prize under the lights, with thousands watching us, I gave a speech in 30 seconds and took some pictures. Take a deep breath and looked at each other. We work so hard for so long ... And finally, took a few minutes to reflect the realization that we actually managed to bring a truly unique product to market erotic and the world seemed to really recognize the We-Vibe. And straight back to work the next day.

What does your family feel about your new career? They are proud of the We-vibe?

We are very relieved and happy to say "yes", our friends and family are proud of the We-Vibe and many are relieved that things are going well, because they have invested years ago when the We-Vibe was little more than a glint in my eyes. The children basically do not know him, but our friends always want to know where we are, and are eager to know the latest sales in the markets of Europe and other exotic places around the world. Our friends and family are happy that the deal has not failed, because although they get along well with everyone, not like we were living in their basements.
