High school students can access the condoms with the registration number

The Ministry of Health chose the condom machine created by the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Santa Catarina (SC-IF), in Florianópolis, to distribute the country. A project of Joao Pessoa (PA) will also be used.

The Ministry's intention is to install the equipment in 40 schools in Brazil. Florianópolis is one. The names of other cities and date of installation have not been defined.

According to Ellen Vita, technical assistant to the Unit for Prevention of STD and AIDS of the Ministry of Health, before launching the challenge from 36 federal institutes of education, the government tried to import a machine from Miami, USA. But the equipment does not meet the needs: capacity of 500 condoms, programming for the student to use the machine by typing registration and password, limit of 20 condoms per month for each student and be made of durable material.

- The machine proposed by Florianópolis meets all the guidelines that we ask. It will now be produced on a commercial scale, with the price set by the company win the bid - Ellen says.

She did not talk about values, or how many students will be met with action. He only said that to help in the development of the device created by IF-SC and the Institute of Paraíba, the federal government invested about $ 180,000 - U.S. $ 90 000 for each unit.

To develop the unit, three students of Mechatronics told with the help of two teachers of the same course and a student of Product Design. They used material that does not break to assemble the prototype of the device, which weighs 20 pounds.

The course coordinator Mechatronics, Valdir Noll, said the team tried to design a machine for easy access for students and the head of school that will have a key to open and close the machine.

The student must be enrolled in high school to have access to condoms. He enters the registration number and password on the display machine. For months, each student is entitled to 20 units. 500 condoms fit the machine. When in the end, the system issues an alert to the responsible add more.

Secretariat advocates debates

The State Department of Education estimates that it takes a discussion with the parents before the installation of condom machines.

Rosemari Martin Koch, coordinator of the sector Prevention in Schools, says that instead of the colleges, the devices could be installed in health centers. It would be a possibility to avoid controversy with parents, who two years ago, when the project was released, rejected the idea.

In the State Institute of Education (IEE), in Florianópolis, the largest public school in Latin America, the chance of installing the machine is not surprising. The director of education, Vandelin Holy Borguevon, admits that the issue is still controversial among parents, educators and students. But estimates that the use would have an educational principle and health.

Borguevon understands that, just as important to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy, is to clarify the doubts about young sex.

- We intend to speak on the topic of sexuality programs within the school. We will work hard to make it clear that sex can not be released. Everything happens at the right time and the monitoring of the family - he points out.

With 4,700 students, the IEE has a deliberative council composed of five teachers, five employees, five students, five parents and one director. The chairman, Serbian Tulio de Lacerda believes that most parents support the initiative if an equipment is intended for college.

- Anything that can help young people avoid disease and pregnancy is favorable. I think at first one or the other will be against, but then they realize it's to help. We need to think collectively, which is the majority - ensures Lacerda.

For Georgia Benetti, a specialist in the Humanities at the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Unisul), the school would be interesting to take advantage of the arrival of sexuality condoms to work with students. She believes that if the goal of action is prevention, responsible for directing need to think of a place to store the machine, without embarrassing the student.
